Photographer Jonathan De Los Santos recently joined the vibrant scene of Middletown Fashion Week, capturing the essence of the event that combined cutting-edge fashion with a mission to support the local homeless community.
The week-long event showcased the creative talents of designers from across the country, alongside local stars, with Cardicc Couture taking center stage. De Los Santos' lens documented the stunning runway presentations featuring the latest trends, alongside the energy and excitement of the models and the audience.
Beyond the glamour, Middletown Fashion Week served a vital purpose: raising crucial funds for the town's homeless shelter. The proceeds from the event directly benefited those in need, making it a celebration of fashion with a heart.
De Los Santos' presence at the event highlights the power of fashion to not only entertain and inspire, but also to act as a force for positive change within the community.
The Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) campus now has a new resource for students seeking to hone their conflict resolution skills and learn about the power of mediation. Jonathan De Los Santos Founder and President of the Mediation Club aims to provide a welcoming space for members to explore the theory and practice of mediation while fostering a more peaceful and collaborative campus environment.
The club recently held its inaugural event, which focused on the role of mediation in halting the brutal conflict in Liberia. The event featured a screening of the documentary "Pray the Devil Back to Hell," by Nobel Peace Prize recipient Leymah Gbowee followed by a panel discussion with Sally Massaquoi, a survivor of the war, and Henri Wilson, a Liberian immigrant. This powerful event highlighted the real-world impact of mediation in resolving complex international conflicts.
The club offers a variety of activities for students, including workshops on core mediation skills like active listening and communication, seminars featuring experts in conflict resolution, and opportunities to participate in mock mediation simulations. These experiences will equip students with valuable tools to navigate disagreements in their academic, social, and professional lives.
The Mediation Club extends beyond just skill development; it fosters a sense of community. The club provides a platform for students from diverse backgrounds to connect, share experiences, and build meaningful relationships. Additionally, leadership opportunities within the club allow students to develop their organizational and communication skills.
Ultimately, the SCSU Mediation Club aspires to contribute to a more positive campus culture. By promoting mediation and peaceful dialogue, the club can help create a more inclusive and respectful environment where students can thrive.
As President of the SCSU Mediation Club, I had the incredible opportunity to lead our members in marching alongside Southern Connecticut State University at the vibrant Bridgeport's 32nd Annual Juneteenth Parade & Harambee Festival.
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day news of slavery's abolition finally reached enslaved people in Texas, the last Confederate state to do so. It's a day filled with celebration, reflection, and a renewed commitment to racial equality.
For me, participating in the Juneteenth parade wasn't just about celebrating freedom. It was a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for justice, and how the core values of mediation deeply connect to that fight.
In the heart of New Haven, Connecticut, the Taking Initiative Center stands as a beacon of hope for individuals navigating the challenging journey of addiction recovery. Established through the collaborative efforts of Marrakech, Goodwill of Southern New England, and the APT Foundation, this center offers far more than just a space; it provides a holistic approach to support, engagement, and transformation.
At the core of the Taking Initiative Center's mission is the recognition that recovery is not a one-size-fits-all process. Instead, it is a deeply personal journey that requires tailored support at every step. This understanding fuels the center's multifaceted approach, which addresses not only immediate needs but also long-term goals for sustainable recovery and personal growth.
